William Lee, Ph.D., President & CEO, Cofounder, Director

Dr. Lee is a leading scientist in the field of nano-grafting who received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in the lab of Dr. Kyoichi Saito, a key Scientific Advisor to the Company. Dr. Lee developed membranes for peritoneal dialysis, polymeric electrolyte fuel cells, microbial cell removal and immobilization. In collaboration with Dr. Jeff Morgan, Dr. Lee developed a membrane to capture virus particles. Prior to founding eMembrane, Inc., Dr. Lee worked for JAFCO, Japan's largest venture capital firm. Dr. Lee has published more than 20 papers and is a co-inventor of 14 patent applications related to nano-grafting.

Jeff Morgan, Ph.D., Cofounder, Director

Dr. Morgan is currently an Associate Professor of Medical Science and Engineering and CoDirector of Center for Biomedical Engineering at Brown University and a leading scientist in the fields of gene therapy and tissue engineering where he has published over 60 papers and 2 patents. Prior to Brown, Dr. Morgan was an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Before joining Harvard, Dr. Morgan was the Cofounder and Scientific Officer of Somatix Corporation in 1998, a biotech company focused on gene therapy that was acquired after three years for a stock swap valued at $35 million.

Ih-Houng Loh, Sc.D. Founder and Chairman of AST Products, Inc.

Dr. Loh is currently the Chairman of AST Products, Inc., a company based in Massachusetts that provides surface modification solutions for medical devices and specialty materials industries. Dr. Loh founded AST Products in 1989 and has built the company to become one of the top three players in the medical device coating industry. Dr. Loh also cofounded Collagen Matrix, Inc. (NJ) in 1997, Applied Nano Technology Science, Inc. (Taiwan) in 2001 and Astrogen Bioscience, Inc. (CA) in 2002. He currrently is the Board Director at Collagen Matrix and Chairman of the Board at both Applied Nano Technology Science and Astrogen Bioscience.

Kyoichi Saito, Ph.D.

Dr. Saito is currently a Professor of Materials Technology at Chiba University, Chiba, Japan. Dr. Saito is internationally recognized as the world's leader in the use of radiation-induced grafting to generate new functionalized materials and membranes. In addition to authoring over 100 technical publications and 3 US and 15 Japanese patents, Dr. Saito has commercialized a novel nonwoven cloth containing polymer brushes that captures and neutralizes odors. Dr. Saito is also the leading scientist in a Japanese national project testing the use of one of his membranes for the large-scale recovery of uranium and useful rare metals from seawater.

Takanobu Sugo, Ph.D.

Dr. Sugo is currently the President and CEO of Environmental Purification Research Institute, Inc. (a.k.a. KJK, Inc.) (Gunma, Japan). Prior to KJK, Mr. Sugo was the General Manager of the Radiation Processing and Development Laboratory of Takasaki Radiation Chemistry Research Establishment, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Mr. Sugo has published over 110 articles and holds 25 US and 30 Japanese patents on radition-induced grafting and has collaborated with Dr. Kyoichi Saito for more than 20 years. Mr. Sugo's work has lead to several major commercial successes including a high performance filter device for ultrapure water production in the semiconductor industry where a nonwoven-cloth membrane is used as part of the self-regeneration device and a membrane that has been used as a battery separator in 100% of all the alkali primary batteries and 45% on the Ni-Cd secondary batteries manufactured in Japan since 1995.

David Drutz, M.D.

Dr. Drutz is currently a General Partner with Pacific Rim Ventures Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan), a cross-border venture capital firm focused on life sciences investment. Dr. Drutz serves on the Boards of Directors of MethylGene, Inc. (Montreal, Canada) and Tranzyme, Inc. (Birmingham, AL). Prior to Pacific Rim Ventures, Dr. Drutz was the President & CEO of Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Durham, NC), President & CEO of Sennes Drug Innovations (Houston, TX), Vice President, Daiichi Pharmaceutical Corp. (Ft. Lee, NJ), and Vice President Biological Sciences and Vice President Clinical Research of Smith Kline & French Laboratories (King Prussia, PA).

John Garvey, J.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Garvey is currently a Partner at Foley and Lardner, LLP. Prior to Foley, he was a Member at Epstein Becker & Green P.C. Dr. Garvey works with pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients, primarily those companies engaged in drug discovery, genomics, proteomics, small molecule drug design, immunology and vaccine technologies, drug delivery, gene therapy technologies, stem cell technologies and biomedical devices. His practice includes advising clients on the creation and development of patent portfolios, and their strategic use in corporate collaborations and financial transactions, as well as patent validity, freedom to operate and infringement opinions. Dr. Garvey also supports the firm's litigation and patent interference practices.

Hatsushi Shimizu, Ph.D.

Dr. Shimizu is currently the President of Shimizu Patent Office (Tsukuba Science City, Japan), one of the top speciailzed biotechnology patent law firms in Japan. He also serves as a consultant to the Organization for Pharmaceutical Safety and Research (OPSR) and  as a Visiting Professor at the Tokai University School of Medicine in Japan. Prior to founding Shimizu Patent Office in 1992, Dr. Shimizu was a Patent Examiner at the Japan Patent Office in charge of all biotechnology patent applications. From 1999 to 2000, Dr. Shimizu was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Intellectual Property, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo and was one of the key persons to assist the university to establish its licensing office, Center for Advanced Science and Technology Incubation (CASTI).
